Introducing: Irian Darkwood

Getting to know Irian Darkwood, a hard rock/metal singer and entertainer from Nova Scotia, Canada.

What are your origins as an artist? How long have you been creating music?

A: I think I’ve been a musician my whole life ha ha, I’ve been singing since I was quite small in school in choirs and things like that, I moved to the stage when I started doing karaoke and then I became a name there, and then I started singing country music and then here I am today singing the rock and metal ha ha

What should people expect when they check you out? How would you describe yourself?

A: I always find it hard to describe myself ha ha because there are so many different things, but I think it’s a general whole. People can expect emotional, high-energy, relatable messages in my music, things that have happened to them in real life, things that they can identify with.

How did you feel performing your first gig as an artist, and how was it?!

A: The first time I ever stepped on stage I remember I was shaking and I was very nervous, but once I sang the song and I saw, you know, the smiles and everyone clapping, and then afterwards when I stepped off the stage people requesting songs it was like I found my new drug. I found my love, which was just awesome.

What are you working on at the moment that people can check out?

A: Well, at the moment, my new release is out now, it’s called Light at The End of The Tunnel, if you check out my Instagram you can find the link for that there under Irian Darkwood, also lots of other songs are in the works for upcoming releases in the future.

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?

A: Well, ha ha, I’m not actually really sure what band I’m suited for per se but I would love to open for Lzzy Hale, I love her so much.

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

A: Well, I’m really good friends with OddFisheOfficial, so I would really love to see them break out onto the scene, if they haven’t already ha ha

What frustrates you about the music business?

A: I would have to say the struggle with the streaming services is real; it’s a lot harder when the interest in live music seems to be on the decline.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

A: Well, those could be two separate events, because my first musical experiences when I was in elementary school, I was six or seven years old, and I auditioned for the honour choir, I didn’t make it, but that’s OK, I loved singing in the school choir anyways. But the thing that kind of made me have an aha moment or lightbulb moments as we call it, would’ve been when I first got onto the stage for karaoke actually believe it or not and I got a taste for singing in front of people and with a microphone and stuff and and just it was like a drug it was is highly addicting, and makes me really happy, to see people’s reactions and to see them enjoying themselves.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

A: I think the last gig I attended as a fan was The Offspring

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

A: I think personally that I’m quite passionate about mental health.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

A: I have some country music in my albums that I listen to, lol, but I think some of the most surprising stuff would be the classical music, like I have Mozart’s Four Seasons

Everybody is a fan of something. Who or what are you a fan of?

A: As I said earlier, I’m a big fan of Lzzy Hale, I also really love the 80s and 90s rock/metal genre as well, we’re a big fan of Skid Row, and Europe.

What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?

A: I’m exposed to a lot of new music, actually, because I’m on the XRP radio show weekly, so it’s really cool to be there and listen to the new music that’s out there.

What does 2025 hold for you?

A: Lots of new music in the works, hopefully just more of the same, really ha ha.
