Anthemic Brit alt rockers, DETROIT RUN, continue their ascent with the release of their much anticipated new EP, Defiance – Part 1, which arrives on Friday 30th May. Get to know the band, below:
What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?
The band has been going since 2022. Wes (drums), Nathan (bass), and Tom (vocals) started Detroit Run, and then Gary (guitar) joined later in 2022 to complete the lineup.
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Detroit Run?
People should expect a high-energy show. We always make sure that we put everything into our live performances. We think we have managed to create a signature sound to what we do. We combine a huge alt-rock sound with synth electronics. If people are fans of artists such as Bring Me The Horizon and Bad Omens, then they should definitely check us out.
How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!
The first gig we played was a release show for our debut EP “Room 14”. There were some nerves on the day, as to be expected, but that was soon replaced with excitement once we hit the stage. We had a blast
What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?
We are currently building up to the release of our second EP, “Defiance Part One”. The first single, “Invincible”, has been released for people to get a taste of what’s to come.
Regarding a similar audience, which band at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?
We feel that an artist like Bad Omens would be perfect to open for at the moment. Our style and sound would definitely suit that show.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
Wes: There are so many good bands out there, Siamese is a band who I think should be much bigger than they are!
Tom: A band called Acres who have recently toured America with The Plot in You. They’re my favourite current band, and I believe they have so much writing quality in how they structure and create songs!
Gary: There is a band that we supported sometime back that I have loved ever since we played with them: Two Year Break. I keep seeing them around the UK and always try to catch them when I can.
Nathan: For me personally I think a band called Normandie should be a lot bigger than they are. I saw them a while back and was blown away by them!
What frustrates you about the music business?
We think the most relevant answer would be how hard it is to break into the industry and take it to the next level. This is something that people work so hard at and put their entire lives into just to have a potential chance of making it. It is so hard in the modern day. All you can do is keep working and keep at it. Especially if it is something that you love.
What are your first musical memories? And what lightbulb moment made you say “I want to do that”?
Gary: My earliest musical memory is Queen always being on at some point around the house when growing up. My lightbulb moment was the first-ever gig I went to (Green Day’s American Idiot Tour). This was the moment where I went “that is what I want to do”
Tom: I had Nirvana on my first iPod as a young 12 year old, their style was very different but given my age and mental state at the time, it was different to the typical pop, rnb, Status Quo kind of music that I would listen to, so to hear something different was interesting.
Wes: Watching bands play on huge stages on TV in front of thousands of people. That was always my dream!
Nathan: My early musical memories were in high school growing up. I started listening to a lot of punk rock and watching a lot of festivals on YouTube, this is when I knew this is what I wanted to do.
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
Tom: Bloodywood (Manchester O2 Ritz)
Gary: Papa Roach with Wage War
Nathan: Papa Roach with Wage War
Wes: Bring Me the Horizon with Bad Omens
What current social issues are you particularly passionate about?
Right now? It is definitely seeing a lot of local venues closing down across the UK. These are the gateways and starting points for artists who want to get themselves out there. With more venues that have shut up shop, it is making it really hard for artists to have a chance or even just to play a show.
The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?
Tom: I listen to quite a few movie official soundtrack albums. One I listen to quite religiously is ‘Top Gun Maverick’. Maybe not a surprise, but definitely different.
Gary: It might not be a “surprise,” but compared to regular music albums, there are a lot of video game soundtracks that are always in my playlists. Currently, the “Stellar Blade” soundtrack is a regular culprit. I’m terms of an actual artist, Ashikko is always on my playlist.
Nathan: For me, I have a lot of Irish Country music in my playlists. I also throw in a few TikTok viral artists in my playlists, such as Alex Warren. It’s nice to change it up a bit sometimes.
Wes: Most of my playlists are either really heavy metal or film score music like Hans Zimmer!
Everybody is a fan of something; who or what are you a fan of?
Gary: Gaming, Pro Wrestling, and Pokemon/Anime
Nathan: For m,e I’m a huge nerd, so anything tech-related, I love messing about with a lot of electronics
Wes: Love CGI, and love making CGI stuff! Anything film-related!
Tom: Gaming, MMA, Parkour, Anime, and Pro Wrestling.
What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?
Nathan: Been really enjoying listening to Wage War and Siamese recently
Wes: Wind Walkers, I’ve really enjoyed, and Siamese!
Tom: Been listening to a lot of Siamese and Bloodywood!
Gary: So this year, I have been put onto a few bands by people. The Home Team, Windwaker, and From Ashes To New are just a few
What does this year hold for you?
We will have to wait and see. We have some shows booked in. We also have the release of our new EP “Defiance Part One” on the horizon.
How active are you on social media, and where can people connect with you?
We are active across all the usual platforms. If people want to connect with us, they can do so on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, etc. We are often doing live streams as well, so people should definitely come and hang out with us there.
