Call To The Void are an intensely intriguing four-piece rock crew hailing from London. Fronted by Jack Osborne, with John McGlade on guitar, John Settle taking care of the groove on bass, and Glen Bartholomew handling the beats, CALL TO THE VOID’s vast influences pan from Placebo and The Smashing Pumpkins through David Bowie, The Doors, and Tool. Their anthemic new single, Viper’s Venom, has just been released and Jack was on hand to give us the lowdown on all things Call To The Void-related
What are the origins of Call To The Void?
Jack: John Settle and John McGlade met back in the year 2000 and have played together through the years ever since, similarly myself, and Glen Bartholomew met in 2008. We played together in a previous metal band and have sustained a close friendship for many years. As a band, we’ve been playing together since October 2021.
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Call To The Void?
Jack: It’s’ high energy, hooky, heavy, rock noir, haunting, and full of attitude.
How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!
Jack: I think we were all pretty relaxed until about 40 minutes before we were due on stage! It was a trip and it went surprisingly well for a first go. My adrenaline only started to calm before our last song.
What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?
We’re working on a couple of new songs in the studio, one of which we’re planning to debut at the end of the month when we play The Camden Assembly, 28th September… Come along and check it out!
Regarding a similar audience, which band at the minute do you feel Call To The Void would be best suited to open for?
Jack: Currently I’m not really sure, but I think we would have warmed up the crowd well for the links of the Deftones & Alice In Chains.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
London-based band and great friends of ours Strawgirl have some killer songs. We’ve played together once and can’t wait to do it again. Wish them only success.
What frustrates you about the music business?
Jack: As an independent artist in this modern world of technology and the Internet, we have great access to distribution platforms and getting our songs out there, the trouble is everyone is doing the same thing, and the competition is so high. We are also living in a time where blogs, magazines, and journalists are sponging off of artists trying to take their first steps… Social media is a great tool but it has a lot to answer for.
What are your first musical memories? And what lightbulb moment made you say “I want to do that”?
Jack: For me, it was probably seeing My Ruin perform at The Garage Highbury Corner London 2003. It was the most exciting thing I’d ever seen. The atmosphere was electric and at a time before camera phones, such a raw connection between Tairrie and the crowd.
Settle: Growing up listening to all the Seattle bands of the 90s made me want to play music
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
Jack: Stevie Nicks At Hyde Park London. It was a privilege to see her perform, Rock Royalty.
Settle: Twenty One Pilots. Amazing show for their last tour.
What current social issues are you particularly passionate about?
Jack: The Equality and freedom of people in the LGBTQ community, particularly the horrors of conversion therapy.
The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?
Jack: Christina Aguilera – ‘Stripped’, it’s a phenomenal album.
Everybody is a fan of something, who or what are you a fan of?
Jack: I’m a fan of director Robert Eggers and his last 3 films, and extremely excited for his remake of the 1922 movie ‘Nosferatu’ Based on Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.
Settle: Big fan of Vinyl records. I love stumbling upon a new record or an artist that’s new to me and going down the rabbit hole of listening to their entire catalog.
What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?
Jack: I can’t speak for the rest of the band, but I’m digging SOFT PLAY’S New album ‘HEAVY JELLY’
What does the remainder of 2024 hold for Call To The Void?
We have just released our third single release ‘Viper’s Venom’. It was the first song we wrote and it’s been a long time coming. In October we are heading back into the studio to record a cover song with a special guest appearance.
How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?
We are very active on social media, people can find us on TikTok, Insta, FB…you name it!
