USA 4-piece Hush Money recently released their new single ‘No Questions’ (taken from the latest album ‘Go Back Home’), and we caught up with the guys – brothers Seth Weaver (vocals/guitar) and Greg Weaver (vocals/drums), Caleb Logan (vocals/guitar) and Nathaniel Newberry (bass) – to get the lowdown on everything Hush Money-related.
What are the origins of Hush Money, and how long have you been playing together?
We started out as a 3-piece cover band, which included Seth, Greg, and Nathaniel. It was easy to do since Seth and Greg are brothers, and Nathaniel is a 1st cousin. We would remain that way until Greg met Caleb in college in ‘09. Since then, we have been playing together in some sort of fashion. We’ve changed band names, lost a member, and taken breaks, but we’ve remained together through some trying times to finally be who we are today.
Hush Money hails from Georgia, USA. What is it about Georgia that makes the state such a rich musical landscape?
Georgia is a melting pot of high-quality music. It has been for as long as we can remember. You look at the superstars in Country, Bluegrass, Gospel, Rock and Roll, Blues, Soul, Southern Rock, R & B, Hip-Hop, etc, that have hailed from Georgia. It really is one of the greatest places to draw influences from. We are blessed to call this place our home and a place where we can draw so much influence from.
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Hush Money?
A very refined blend of southern US music. We are not subject to any one corner of the musical room; we have always been and always will be a product of drawing from all our influences. We will always be unapologetically ourselves.
Vocal harmonies play a major role in the Hush Money sound. To you, who would be the ultimate vocal harmonies band? The Eagles? The Beach Boys? None of the above?
We would say “yes” to all of those folks. But we’ve learned to sing and find harmonies growing up in small southern churches. Some of the most powerful and beautiful harmonies come out of there. We have 3 people who can sing lead, and 3 people who can sing harmony. It is an absolute strength that we choose to exploit whenever we have the opportunity.
What themes does the current single ‘No Questions’ explore?
Being fed up with the 9-5 and breaking out. Watching your life pass you by and feeling trapped and unable to obtain life’s satisfaction in living by your own means. We had fun shooting the video!
In what ways do you feel that the band has progressed since releasing the debut album ‘Industry Standard’ back in 2022?
We are always growing and drawing from experiencing life; if we ever stop learning or growing, it’s time to walk away. So I would say since “Industry” we’ve grown, gotten older, refined our songwriting and production abilities, and continued to be true to our artistic selves.
The band namechecked Steve McQueen on the current album ‘Go Back Home’, which McQueen is cooler: Cooler King-McQueen, or Frank Bullitt-McQueen?
Both are great films, and that’s a tough choice! But we’re gonna have to go with Cooler. The Great Escape is SUCH a classic, but we are also all very much fans of WWII period films. With McQueen and Garner as stars, it was destined to be one of the greatest of all time…we’ve heard that in the UK it’s always watched at Christmas and Easter with your family?!
What experiences did you take from appearing at the UK’s Call of the Wild Festival back in 2024?
We took in every second. The surreal moment when a group of people from another country were singing the lyrics you’ve written, recorded, and released, then back to you, was unmatched. It’s something we as kids only dreamt of, so to say it was a life-changing experience, the whole trip, would be a massive understatement.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
There are so many. Just in our area that we are in there are a couple of other bands we have grown to be close with. The Band Waleska and One for the Road. Those 2 bands, along with us, are REALLY starting to make some noise and “rising tides raises all ships.”
What frustrates you about the music business?
The industry isn’t based on emotion and authenticity anymore. Not to say it isn’t still out there, but everything is so formulated across a lot of places that it’s hard to find something real about it. There is also still a pay-to-play function that is driving so many talented artists out of the industry and robbing us of authentic quality art.
What are your first musical memories? And what was your lightbulb moment that made you say, “I want to do that”?
It almost feels like we were always supposed to do this. We have so many, too many to mention, family members who were outstanding musicians who greatly influenced and coached us while we were growing up. So, not sure there was a “lightbulb” moment as much as realizing that this is what is in our blood and genetic makeup to do. The path that has divinity all over it. You can fight it, but eventually you’re going to be what you were made to be.
What current social issues are you particularly passionate about?
As a couple of us have children of our own, we see the hardships that some children have to go through. They weren’t asked to be brought into this world, and it isn’t their fault that they require to be taken care of and are dependent on their families, so the mistreatment of children and the horrible situations that some have been put into is heartbreaking and very close to us. Every opportunity we get, we try to find a way to help or support children in need.
Everybody is a fan of something. Who or what are you a fan of?
Outside of music, we are all baseball fans! We love watching the Atlanta Braves. Going to the games, wearing their gear, watching on TV with family, our friends, and good food, always good times!
What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?
We have really been digging on some of the new Sturgill Simpson numbers (Johnny Blue Skies), The Red Clay Strays, Charley Crockett, and we are looking forward to the new stuff from The Black Keys, Brent Cobb, Chevelle, and some unreleased tracks from Waylon Jennings.
What does the remainder of 2025 hold for Hush Money?
Our album ‘Go Back Home’ will be on streaming services in full soon…but buy it from our site before on CD/vinyl! We have shows lined up to finish out the year, we are always working on new material…maybe some out towards the end of the year!
