Introducing: Wasting Time

Wasting Time is a four-piece pop-punk band currently based in Toronto. Bassist Mike took some time out from his day to fill in the blanks on our introduction to Wasting Time…

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

Wasting Time was initially formed in the early 2000s by our singer and guitarist Vlad along with 3 previous members. That incarnation of the band would break up in 2009 and the project would be dormant as would most of Vlad’s musical activities until 2017, when he regained the itch to perform again. He quickly assembled a new lineup, and we’ve been plugging away as a band ever since.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

The first gig of our current lineup took place in the summer of 2017 the night Green Day played in our home of Toronto as an afterparty for their show. It was a wild, late event with many friends in attendance and we played a stripped-down, acoustic show at our friend’s bar. No major gaffs or embarrassing moments occurred thankfully.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?

We’re a melodic punk band that likes to work up a sweat and have fun while also not being afraid to wear our hearts on our sleeves when playing.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Aside from working hard and loving what you do, utilizing social media as best as you can is key these days.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We have a new single out called, “My Limited French”. It’ll be a single from our second album, “Once More Without Feeling”, which we are almost finished recording and should have out in the fall.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Alkaline Trio

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

Our hometown buddies, Hangtime. Check ‘em out!

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

For me (Mike, the bassist), it would be my exposure to The Beatles and particularly their movies and live performance clips as a child. They were my favourite band (still are), and they looked like they were having on stage in front of a screaming mob while playing some of the best music ever.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The Dirty Nil late last year.

The album that you have in your album collection/spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

P!nk’s Try This.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2020?

Release our aforementioned new single and album, and hopefully play some shows sooner than later once it is safe to do so.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We’ve got Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. We have at least one member checking each account daily, so anyone who drops us a line will very likely receive a response promptly.
