Linder Avenue Band is a project created by the musical writings of Mario Malatesta. Growing up on Linder Avenue in Chicago, the sounds of his family’s music nurtured his budding talent and eventually inspired the name of his band. Despite a detour into a more conventional career, Mario’s love for music drew him back, leading to his enrollment in Berklee’s Certificate Program where he graduated with top honors.
What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?
The Linder Avenue Band is not a “band” per se. I am a singer, songwriter who plays guitar and I have assembled local Las Vegas musicians, as well as musicians from Chicago, to record with to bring my writing alive. The musicians who played on my sessions are outstanding players and singers and they have made their own creative contributions to the tracks.
What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?
I would describe the music of the Linder Ave Band as Power Pop Melodic Rock. Influenced by iconic bands of the 70s and 80s, my music is where the heart of rock’s golden era beats with a modern rhythm. I hope to create music that is both refreshingly new and nostalgically familiar.
How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!
The Linder Ave Band is a studio project. I do not have a touring band.
In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?
As I mentioned, I do not have a touring band. I do think the Spotify algorithm puts together a pretty good Linder Ave Band Mix Playlist of similar artists.
Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?
My roots are from Chicago, and I have lived in Las Vegas for over 20 years. So, I would be partial to any Chicago or Las Vegas-based bands.
What frustrates you about the music business?
I wish there were, or there were more, record companies that were willing to commit and cultivate new artists. Also, I think the industry needs more record companies that are interested in bands or artists that don’t follow some conforming construct when creating music. Finally, the meager royalty rates per stream make it nearly impossible for a new artist, who may not utilize a home studio, to just break even or offset the costs for studio time, session musicians, and promotion.
What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?
I think it may have been Peter Frampton, or Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.
What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?
Peace On Earth.
What new music have you been enjoying so far this year?
They are not new, but I have been enjoying Jellyfish and King’s X.
How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?
I am not very active on social media. I focus my attention on the music first and foremost, streaming, and my presence on the web.
