Introducing: Feral Family

With two new singles, ‘The Balance’ and ‘Feels So Right’, released in quick succession, Yorkshire-based noise merchants Feral Family are on the march. Get to know the band, below:

What are the origins of Feral Family? How long have you been playing together?

When we started, it was just mates jamming out. A mate of mine was drumming there, and they had a really scratchy recording through a phone mic. But I liked what it was all about and the raw sound they were making, so I wanted to come down and jam with them. I was already the singer in a cover band at this point, but wanted more. I wasn’t even the singer at this point, just doing bass and backing vocals in Oscar’s room with the others. Time went by, people started flaking, and it was really only mine and Oscar’s drive that kept us going. Members came and went, but we stayed true to it, and here we are now, still moving. Doing it, y’know. – Jamie

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Feral Family?

Well, the name might give the impression that we’re some modern-day GG Allin & the Murder Junkies, but it’s not like that. We’ve always been like a dysfunctional family, so the name kinda came naturally. We have some heavy tunes, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not sheer intensity start to finish, we have a lot of variation in our music, so it’s very difficult to describe what to expect. I would say expect a bit of everything. – Jamie

When asked about trios, the number one advantage of being a trio is usually cited as “fewer arguments.” Would you agree?

Yeah, we’re adults making noise at the end of the day. With it being such a tight-knit group and the atmosphere we’ve created, everyone brings ideas to the table. We’ve got to listen to them and exercise the idea. Sometimes it doesn’t play out, but we’re here to serve the song; at the end of the day, that’s the mission. – Oscar

In what ways has the band developed since releasing the debut album ‘Without Motion’ 18 months ago? For instance, do you see growth in the songwriting?

We’ve had to delve deeper emotionally, so there are some cuts that are quite emotive melodically and lyrically. We haven’t said we’re gonna make a certain type of record or song, we’ve just set out to make the best tunes we can at the time. We know we’re on the right path with these new songs; we’re doing better than ever, so hopefully that’s testament to our songwriting. – Jamie

You’ve recently released 2 singles in quick succession: ‘The Balance’, and ‘Feels So Right’ – how quickly did the songs come together, and what can you tell us about the lyrical content of both?

We started recording ‘The Balance’ the month the debut album came out, so we already had our sights on pushing forward. Always do. ‘Feels So Right’ came right after at near the middle of 2024. Lyrically, we don’t like to give too much away; let the listener go on that journey. – Oscar

When is the full EP set for release?

February 2026

How much of a concern to you is the rise of AI in music?

No concern whatsoever. No one’s gonna go pay to see AI play a show – unless it’s ABBA – Oscar

With regards to a similar audience, which band at the moment would Feral Family be best suited to open for?

At this moment in time, we just want to get out and play to as many people as possible. We just want to play music – we don’t mind who it’s with, we just want to get minutes on the pitch. – Oscar

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

I think Oasis are on to something. – Oscar

What frustrates you about the music business?

I wouldn’t say we’re a part of the music business, we’ve just got the blinders on, we’re creating and releasing music as much as we can and that’s all we’ve got to think about – Oscar

What are your first musical memories? And what was your lightbulb moment that made you say, “I want to do that”?

My dad showed me Wu-Tang – Gravel Pit when that came out. That was the moment I thought Wow, I can do this. – Oscar

DIIV in Leeds & Oasis at Wembley – Oscar & Jamie

What current social issues are you particularly passionate about?
