Having been locked away in the studio for some time, working on album number two, Wakefield dynamo Loz Campbell has released her first new music in some time, and the first taster of said album. New single ‘Monster’ (her first new music in two years?) is the byproduct of a few more years down the road and a few more years of life experience, resulting in her strongest offering to date. Heavier, grungier, certainly grittier, and packing more of an alt-rock punch than a classic, trad-rock feel, Campbell is happier dealing with the darker aspects of life than with going down to the river to wash her sins away or other overused clichés. Below, Loz picks her top five albums of all-time:
Appetite for Destruction (Guns & Roses) – Timeless. Straight-to-the-point rock n roll! So many classics on this album, they hit it right the first time – almost looks like a greatest hits album. This is an album that deserves a listen from start to finish, no skips allowed.
Paranoid and Sunburnt (Skunk Anansie) – Ballsy, very cleverly political in the sense of how the lyrics are presented. I love SA’s basslines, something I try to push in my music for strong basslines, which the new album definitely has. Skin’s vocals are extraordinary, and I never get bored of listening to these tracks live.
Version 2.0 (Garbage) – Listened to this heavily in my late teens. The track “When I Grow Up” still hits! Super catchy and feel-good but rockin’ at the same time. A perfect combination album for me.
Jagged Little Pill (Alanis Morissette) – The quality of the songwriting is superb. I’m not sure anyone will ever create an album so raw that resonates with so many people, generation after generation. Even though there is rawness throughout the album, there are also weaves of really cool and detailed individual instrument lines; the bass lines for me are especially tasty. This album also works so well acoustic.
All The Right Reasons (Nickelback) – Nostalgic for me, as I always used to listen to this as a kid in the car. The songs still slap. The guitar riffs are my favourite, and I like how they can do heavy and soft, something I have tried to carry across into my own songwriting.
