Winterburn – Track By Track exclusive feature

High voltage rockers WINTERBURN release their long-awaited debut album, Ivory Towers, this Friday. With a slew of support building for the band, we asked vocalist, guitarist, and main songwriter Nas for an exclusive track by track breakdown of the album:

“1. Sinner’s Swing
Sinner’s Swing is basically a song that details the dark side of getting pulled into the decadence and debauchery in Tinseltown. How fame attracts hangers on, people that use you and those who can lure you into the dark world of dope. What seems to be a good time eventually becomes your downfall.

2. Dogtown – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LivRIWuYfOo
Dogtown is me paying homage to probably my favourite place in the world and about a low period in my life and how that all turned around when I flew out and was out on the streets of Venice and Santa Monica.

3. Gypsy
Gypsy is basically a tune about going against the grain and pursuing life as a musician, traveling, playing shows and basically being a road dog, against all the negativity from detractors or people in my hometown telling me my music would never amount to nothing.

4. The Ritual
This song is about addiction.

5. Calijam
Calijam is an instrumental I wrote visualising driving through the hills of Escondido, it’s a Hendrix-influenced tune. I called up my brother Ray Sanchez from LA’s Thrown Into Exile and asked him if he would duel with me on it and the result is a shred fest.

6. Draw the Line
This tune is basically me venting out all the anger and frustration I felt when I moved into a town where all I ever encountered was a deluge of hate and negativity from people. It became a very suffocating situation and it’s about me “drawing the line” and leaving.

7. Vultures
I’ve always been a huge Southern Rock fiend and an Outlaw Country fan. Skynyrd, Blackfoot, The Allman Brothers, Waylon Jennings and Blackberry Smoke are major influences of mine. So, I wrote this little diddy one day on my twelve-string and thought it’d be a perfect segue into the closing track.

8. Ivory Towers – https://youtu.be/opA-ynTh2eY
Ivory Towers came to me really after seeing so many conflicts in the region growing up, just pure carnage. I basically wanted to highlight the plight and suffering of innocent civilians at the hands of warmongers and tyrannical regimes. It is our only political song too.”
