Review: The Black Dahlia Murder – Cathouse, Glasgow 19 Jan 2016

First to take the stage were the mighty Glasgow-based death metal band Scordatura. Scordatura were founded back in 2007, and consists of  Daryl Boyce (vocals), Owen McKendrick (guitar), Derek Wright (bass) and Tam Morman (drums). Scordatura’s discography includes three EP’s, one Live EP, and an album “Torment Of The Week”. View their bandcamp page HERE. Scordatura are currently working on writing their second album, which should hopefully drop later this year!

I was really impressed watching Scordatura pull the crowd into them to get them warmed up “Let’s get some fucking movement in here, we’re not at some fucking pop gig shit“. There were an obvious few fans who turned up to watch the bands set. It’s always nice to see the locals being supported! Not only did Scordatura have a good stage presence, igniting the crowd, but they are a bunch of rather technical dudes, they were super tight. Their music was filled with very fast paced riffs and fills, and the vocal spitting was insane! They were heavy! Towards the ending of their set, they managed to get the crowd going proper, a mosh pit opened right up at the end, and everyone was in high spirits. Overall, I enjoyed their set, and by the looks of things, everyone else there did too! Definitely a band to watch out for in the future!

Next up, Benighted,  a death/grind metal five-piece (Julien Truchan vocals, Olivier Gabriel guitar, Kevin Foley drums, Emmanuel Dalle guitar and Pierre Arnoux bass), originating from Saint Etienne, France, and founded way back in 1998, releasing seven studio albums and a live album to date. Benighted released their most recent studio album “Brutalive The Sick”, a year ago in February 2015, and have been touring non-stop since.

Benighted’s set was something else. They are absolutely crazy Frenchmen! At the beginning of their set I felt for them, the sound engineer was having some issues setting up, eating 10-15 minutes of their set, this too was obviously upsetting the crowd a little, but Benighted were top boys, and thanked the eagerly awaiting rowdy Glasgow crowd. Despite the fuck up with the engineering issues, Benighted didn’t let that put a dampener on absolutely tearing up the stage! The technical ability, the heaviness, and sheer passion for what they do… and I mean you could REALLY tell these guys fucking love what they do. Benighted didn’t really have to put much effort into getting the crowd going. Mosh pits opened up during their second song… a bit of crowd surfing, windmilling, and head-banging all involved too, of course! The high vocals were a favourite of mine, he really could hit those high notes. Very controlled and thrilling! The stamina from drummer Kevin Foley was impeccable, every blast beat, every kick, every high-hat, every tom hit… It was all perfectly on point, and the best part of it all he didn’t even look like he was breaking a sweat!  A very lively, if static stance from all three guys, with a little bit more movement from bassist, Pierre by standing on the barriers interacting with the crowd. Overall, their whole set was fantastic… I highly recommend catching these guys on tour! At points through their set I forgot they were the support for a bit. They definitely gave The Black Dahlia Murder a run for their money! Absolutely fucking nuts – great choice of support!

A light introduction to The Black Dahlia Murder. As I don’t think I really have to say much about these guys…

Well, what can I even begin to say about The Black Dahlia Murder? Founded in 2001, from Detroit, Michagan, USA. A five-piece death metal outfit (Brian Eschbach guitar, Trevor Strnad vocals, Ryan Knight guitar, Max Lavelle bass and Alan Cassidy drums), signed to Metal Blade Records and have unleashed four EPs, two DVDs, and seven studio albums, with their latest “Abysmal”, which dropped in September 2015 (purchase HERE) Tonight, they were absolute sheer brilliance! Within seconds, from the lights dimming down for the show to start, the crowd were already going absolutely fucking skits! They were ready. “What the fuck is up, Glasgow?!” the first words coming from Trevor Strnard… The Cathouse were on their feet! It absolutely erupted! The Black Dahlia Murder burst right into their set, pits opened up, crowd surfing, windmilling, head-banging, fists in the air… The place was absolute carnage! For me, the best part of their set was their live sound. You don’t often come across bands who actually sound the same on their recordings to when they preform live, but they bloody did! Despite Trevor having to chin the sound engineer about the sound they were giving them, they still sounded great! They were effortlessly tight! The Black Dahlia Murder had an immense stage presence. They knew the stage was theirs, they knew this time was theirs, and they took it! The riffs and solos were something else too, absolutely on point! I loved the cheekiness of the drum fills, the pure depth of the bass tones, and I absolutely adored the impeccably quick lyrical spitting. Exactly how much air can he hold within his lungs in order to do that?! The Black Dahlia Murder are a band in their prime right now. Everyone who cares or loves this death metal scene HAVE to go and see these guys while they can. They are not a band to be taken lightly! My personal favourite points of their set was their breakdowns and beatdowns, and their technical ability to making them sound as heavy as possible, but run as smoothly as possible. The crowd they managed to pull in last night were fucking crazy, a perfect example of how crazy the Glasgow fans can get! The mash-up from playing old and new material was a good steady pace. They kept the older run of songs for the dying minutes, and I’m glad, because when they were playing these tracks, that was when the Glasgow crowd kicked off well and truly. We had a circle pit running from room to room through The Cathouse. Mosh pits were everywhere, dancing, head-banging, windmilling, crowd surfing, fists in the air, pint glasses being launched left, right, and centre! The place was bonkers! Overall, I would probably say this was definitely one of the best gigs I have been to in a long, long time. The atmosphere from the crowd, and the sheer talent reeking from these guys, honestly… What. A. Show! I only have one thing to say to anyone reading  and are thinking of going to see The Black Dahlia Murder… just fucking go!!!
