Ryan Hamilton invites us on a Permanent Holiday

Eight months and eight tracks into his 1221 project, maybe Ryan Hamilton is wishfully thinking as he sings about a ‘Permanent Holiday’. A playful – almost waltzing – opening verse soon makes way for the total mayhem of a chorus, Hamilton suddenly sounding like a man who most certainly needs a break.

Not making light of this terrible pandemic, but with so much being put on hold these past fifteen months or so, it may have felt at times (for some of us) like a permanent hiatus, if not quite a holiday. Who knows what the future may look like, but what are you looking forward to in the new new normal?…

It’s so crazy, what we’re all living through. Everytime we think we’re just about out of the woods, it’s like the Universe goes, “Nope! Not yet”. This song is definitely about escaping. But for me, it’s more about escaping the tortures of Mental Health related struggles. If there was a highway to paradise, that we could all drive, or “holiday” to on the weekends… with the option to stay forever. Wouldn’t that be nice?

The cover image feels like you’re in a cool movie like ‘Drive’ or ‘Gone In 60 Seconds’, about to jump into a beast of a car and floor it…

Yeah, I like the feel of this cover image. Something dark and poetic about it. Like I’m waiting on a ride… but not quite sure if it’s gonna end well. Haha.

With these 1221 releases set to be collectively released as an album later this year, do you have plans to celebrate the completion of the project?

Ya know, we had big plans for an album release show… but COVID is making travel so uncertain still… and potentially impossible. So, we’ve come up with something REALLY FUN. Don’t wanna spill the beans just yet. But I think it’s gonna make the album release in December extra special.

Okay, cheesy cliched interview question – if you were to have a Permanent Holiday, what would it be?…

HA! I’m gonna say Heaven. Up in the clouds. No money stresses, no mental health stresses… Just paradise with no time clock.

Hamilton has been heralded by Spin magazine as one of the ‘Best Lesser-Known Artists of the Last 35 Years’.
