Ryan Hamilton Announces New Single – ‘Do the Damage’

Ryan HamiltonLike a mighty T.Rex stomp down a 2-4-6-8 motorway, with (The) Cars & Drive-By Truckers spun in every direction, Ryan Hamilton’s latest is a hook & riff-heavy monster. Merely a couple of months now from the next album’s release, ‘1221’ shows no signs in running out of steam.

So, what is ‘the Damage’ and why should we be doing it?

It’s the equivalent of “LET THEM HAVE IT!” In my mind, it’s the feeling of finally getting fed up with a bully-type person, and losing the ability to NOT punch them in the face. I think we’ve all felt that feeling, or something similar. Haha.

There’s a reference to the Kevin Bacon dance craze classic ‘Footloose’, immediately followed by a very 80’s – so cheesy it’s cool – synth solo. Such knowing flourishes must be fun to throw in?

I mean, sometimes you just gotta go for it! Haha. When I wrote that lyric, I knew it was a bit tongue in cheek. Credit to my favorite producer, Dave Draper, for encouraging me… and taking us in the direction he did. I love that 80s vibe in this song. It’s so random and unexpected. If they did a remake of Footloose, this song is totally going on the soundtrack.

You’ve a considerable collection of new songs from the past couple of years that you’ve been robbed the joy of playing in front of a live audience. This latest single feels like it would go down great live, which songs are you most looking forward to playing on tour?

I’m really looking forward playing this one live! This one, and “Permanent Holiday” are probably the two new tracks I’m most looking forward to performing live. Can’t believe it’s been so long since I played a show. Almost two years now. Wow.

Speaking of touring, when can we look forward to seeing you out on the road next? It’s been a while.

Fingers crossed for next February, and then A LOT more next year. Haven’t announced anything yet. But things are FINALLY looking like they’re coming together.

Of course your annual Holiday Hoedown show couldn’t happen in 2020 for obvious reasons. Can we expect any festive fun this December?

We actually have something REALLY cool planned. I can’t wait to share! But I can’t share… yet.

Hamilton has been heralded by Spin magazine as one of the ‘Best Lesser-Known Artists of the Last 35 Years’.
