“Three of Earth’s mightiest voices harnessed as one. Three times the power, achieving what one voice cannot. Three Men who have committed their lives to heavy metal. The Three Tremors…” Metalized Avengers maybe? Iron Men? Nah, The Three Tremors it is then. Cheesey (but ingenious) band name aside, The Three Tremors are deserving of any self-respecting metalhead’s attention. Made up of Tim “Ripper” Owens (Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Dio Disciples), Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin (Jag Panzer, Satan’s Host, Titan Force), and Sean “The Hell Destroyer” Peck (Cage, Denner/Shermann, Death Dealer), The Three Tremors, on paper at least, shouldn’t work. Vocalists are supposed to be egotistical maniacs after all. Does not play well with others, refuses to share the limelight, that kind of thing; but the game’s not played on paper, and this, the self-titled debut album, does work. It’s a fun romp made up of a heady mix of power metal, old-school metal, and some good old thrash metal. Lashings of high-pitched vocals to annoy dogs everywhere. So, if you are not a fan of piercing vocals, you’d better become one sharpish. It would be your loss if you missed out on the sheer over-the-top gonzo nature of ‘Lust Of The Blade’ just because of your aversion to screaming vocals. Peck and Owens first crossed paths some time ago when Cage opened for Judas Priest on their ‘Jugulator’ tour. Fast forward decades, and finally they are working together. Each vocalist features on each track, the individual voices melding together very well. Owens is a criminally underrated vocalist, and his time in Priest is often overlooked. Here, alongside Conklin and Peck, he sounds like he is having a blast… like the title track exclaims “Three Tremors will wake the dead….” With song titles like ‘Bullets Of The Damned’, ‘When The Last Scream Fades’, ‘Wrath Of Asgard’, and ‘The Pit Shows No Mercy’, the album is hardly subtle… but subtle is so overrated. This is metal, and metal doesn’t really do subtle. ‘Fly Or Die’ deals with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, and features some historical sound bites. Coupled with the furious riffing from Dave “Conan” Garcia and Casey “The Sentinel” Trask, along with the crushing rhythms from bassist Alex Pickard and drummer Sean Elg (what? No nicknames?), it is a furious four minutes. Elg is relentless behind the kit, his double bass work deserving of special mention. From the opener (the kick to the nuts that is ‘Invaders From The Sky’) to the six minute title track closer, this is metal played at pace. Only ‘Sonic Suicide’ drops the tempo a notch or two, yet it’s still one of the strongest tracks of the twelve. There are a few moments that out-Manowar Joey DeMaio and company; ‘Wrath Of Asgard’ springs to mind. Steins raised in the air in perfect unison, it’s a classic Viking drinking song. As a whole, the album works well. On ‘The Cause’, The Three Tremors state “we won’t be diplomatic”, and that best sums up the album. Fuck diplomacy.
