Review: Therapy? – 'Cleave'

‘My heart is so heavy – my peace has gone.’ No rainbows or words of encouragement, just pain. Musically it is a very powerful statement. Sludgey doom-filled riffs during the intro, the intense drumming from Neil Cooper is ever-present, and a mid section that plays havoc with the brain. Through all this bleakness though, there is still the massive chorus that Therapy? are famous for. But before you end up at ‘No Sunshine’, your ears are treated to many aural delights. The stand out moments are many. The crunching opener ‘Wreck It Like Beckett’ (listen to it on cans and purr at the spoken word vocals in the background) is a head-turner. ‘Kakistocracy’ has a Ministry-vibe to it. It’s less electronic than Ministry obviously, but when Cairns asks “Do you feel lost? Because I feel lost…”, with sharp riffing in the background, Uncle Al Jourgensen springs to mind. Waiting to bounce? Here comes ‘Callow’ with a throbbing bass sound from Michael McKeegan. Pogo-inducing for sure. ‘Success? Success Is Survival’ is immense, and has some monster-sized riffage. Then there is the argumentative furiosity of ‘Dumbdown’, which packs an almighty punch. It’s always been impossible to pigeonhole Therapy? Unless you house them in the dovecote marked “crucial”. ‘Cleave’ continues this on both counts. Available now on Marshall Records. Review: Oli Band image on header: Tom Hoad]]>
