Review: Scream Blue Murder – ‘Rock Bottom’

“I never thought I would be the one to say goodbye”. On ‘Inside’ he continues with “this rage inside, I need to let it out”, and let it out he does. A lot of metalcore is focused around the vocals, meaning the playing is often overlooked, but special mention should go to drummer Jamie Bloomer. Frustrated drummers around the world salute you, sir! If ‘Light It Up’ serves as the end of ‘side one’ of the album, then ‘side two’ ramps up the intensity. ‘The Void’ is a great mix of electronica and aggressive vocals. You can imagine Bloomer spitting these words out as the front rows spit them back at him. ‘The Anchor’ continues with some top notch clean vocals, but it’s Bloomer’s unclean vocals that impress the most. Even at their harshest, Scream Blue Murder don’t forget about the melodies, and when they do appear, they are towering. ‘Friends Like Judas’ is the killer moment on the album; pit-inducing beats, and tinnitus-inducing vocals. Try listening to it with the sound at an acceptable level. Not going to happen. Watch that level rise, and here comes the high pitched white noise. Aaron Bloomer states “This album really shows the direction the band is going”. Alarm bells might sound as soon a band talk about direction, but fans should fear not, as there is no massive departure from the debut. It’s the sound of a band growing in stature, and further developing their sound. Mature is a word I’m loathed to use, as it suggests that everything before this was not mature, but yeah, it’s a mature album. Available now on Stay Sick Recordings. Review: Oli]]>
