Review: Monster Truck – 'True Rockers'

“your ears have to pay” followed by “all we need is a real Metal ripper, all we want is to thrash our faces off”. Along with opener ‘True Rocker’, it’s a one-two that packs a hefty punch. ‘True Rocker’ is a call-to-arms that tut-tuts at anyone that suggests Rock is dead. It re-affirms what anyone who still gets a buzz when the lights go down and the first notes play… Rock will never die, and who better to deliver the sermon that celebrates Rock than Dee Snider? It might only be a minute or so in length, but it’s hard to imagine anyone making it as full of life as Snider does. Monster Truck pause for breath on the insanely catchy ‘Evolution’, a more commercial sound that took some flak from the keyboard warriors. The fact that the track is called ‘Evolution’ seems to have passed many of them by. Honestly, the Nickelback digs pass me by. I genuinely don’t hear it at all. I hear a modern Rock track with a massive drum sound that signifies to me, at least, that this one will crush live. Likewise, ‘Young City Hearts’ might cop a bit of flak for it’s high commercial sheen. U2 could sound like this if they ever discover their balls again. Follow that up with the bluesier ‘Devil Don’t Care’ (complete with kick-ass harmonica) and the organ-heavy ‘Undone’, and the variety on ‘True Rockers’ becomes apparent. The pedal gets floored again on ‘Being Cool Is Over’, ‘In My Own World’, and ‘Hurricane’, before the album ends with the atmospheric epic ‘The Howlin’’ (where Marv highlights his full vocal range). ‘True Rockers’ clocks in at under forty minutes. It doesn’t hang around or overstay its welcome, it gets in and gets the job done. From the hazy overtones of ‘Undone’ (Soundgarden with keys) to the full pelt of the glorious ‘True Rocker’, it has something for everyone. An album in the true sense of what albums used to be before the age of streaming and YouTube instant gratification. Old-school in the best possible way, and bloody good fun! Available now through Mascot Label Group. Monster Truck return to the UK later this year alongside Black Stone Cherry and The Cadillac Three. Dates can be found here. Review: Dave]]>
