a cross between Ronnie James Dio and Freddie Mercury.” That’s one hell of a description to live up to, and for me, I don’t really hear it in his voice at all. In fact, I was initially disappointed when I first heard him on previous material, as being a massive Dio fan, I had huge expectations, which, too be honest, no-one can meet… and why should he? Romero has his own style and is great at what he does. His voice really suits the music here, and he really belts out this number. As expected, Magnus’s guitar playing is as stunning as always, and his solo on this song (and every other song on the album), is superb. I always listen in awe at Magnus’s technical mastery of his instrument. He has the perfect blend of melody coupled with explosively fast runs that just take your breath away. I really love the first half of “The Ferrymen”; “End of the Road”, “Ferryman”, “Fool You All” (a high energy song that sounds like it’d be a great live number”. “Still Standing Up” is probably my favourite track on the album, has a riff that you can’t help nodding your head along too, and features a huge feel-good chorus that can’t help but bring a smile to your face. “How the Story Ends” and “Enter Your Dream” don’t quite hit the spot for me, however. Perhaps they’ll grow on me with time though. The album picks up again with the fantastic “Eyes On The Sky”, and the closest thing you’ll find to a ballad here, “Eternal Night”. It’d be great to hear these tracks live, but many of the projects Magnus Karlsson is involved with tend to be studio only, and I think it’s probably the case with The Ferrymen. If you’re already a fan of Magnus Karlsson’s previous songwriting collaborations, or can’t get enough of Ronnie Romero, then you’re going to love this one. I don’t think it’s quite up there with the Allen-Lande or Freefall albums, but it’s still a great slab of melodic metal that deserves your attention. Highly recommended.
