I’m so tired of you lying to my face, you telling me that you’re on the case… you never picked up the phone, you really let me down, that’s what I’m hearing all over town”…ouch! Take that unnamed, faceless industry type! The title track kicks off the album, a topical take on how there is a pill for everything that ails ya today, and in most cases, more pills, whether you need them or not. The simple guitar intro from Big Boy Bloater continues throughout the track, mixed with a few choice guitar licks from the main man, as well as a nailed on drum sound from Matt Cowley. ‘Friday Night’s Alright For Drinking’ makes its case for standout track on the album with a wicked slide guitar that has you instantly reaching to turn the sucker up. The backing vocals give it a soulful, gospel edge that proves to be a genuine surprise. The story could be set in any town on any Friday night, and the only thing left to do once it fades out is hit repeat. The guitar sound is bloody massive! ‘Saturday Night Desperation Shuffle’ is one of those moments where everyone should recognise the protagonist. Bloater tells the tale of someone who is getting ready for that big night out on the pull… ”He don’t need no shower, he just sprays on more cologne”, with the night inevitably ending up as a glorious failure. Again, the guitar sound is incredible, the solos seem off the cuff and should sound immense on the live stage. Top marks as well to bassist Steven Oates for bringing a beefy bottom end to the party. The only thing missing from the tale is the character passing out on the couch while running up a massive phone bill to Babestation. ‘Slackers Paradise’ is another moment where you should be able to say, “Yep, I recognise him”. We’ve all had that flatmate or family member who drives you insane with their general fannying around. Well, here’s the perfect song about them. ‘Oops Sorry’ is a sharp observation on the “it’s not me, it’s you” argument, and Bloater again puts a light, fun sound and vibe alongside a darker subject matter. It’s quite easy to find your toes tapping to lyrics like “Put down the knife… there’s no need to shout… just let me up off the floor and I’ll be on my way”. There is loads on ‘Pills’ to enjoy; the juxtaposition of light, fun music alongside a darker, sinister lyrical content and subject matter, is sublime. The guitars are what shines through, the big fella can play for sure. ‘She Didn’t Even Buy A Ticket’ will simply blow you away. ‘Pills’ is available now through Mascot Label Group.
