Introducing: Rozu

ROZU (Japanese for Rose) is a post-hardcore 4-piece from Denver, Colorado consisting of longtime artists Tim Graham on vocals, David Sundine on guitar, Brian Robertson on drums, and Henry Navarre on bass. Vocalist Tim Graham took some time out during lock-down mode to fill us in on the origins of the band, and how Rozu will make you “want to swing some fists and cry at any given time”.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

We have been a band since 2017, that is when we had all the members on board and started the first writing sessions. We had spent a year writing and working on all the branding and business side of the band before officially announcing the band in late May 2018 with the release of the debut single ‘Dissolve’.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

We all collectively just had this moment after that set of like “oh shit, that was the best first set we have ever had with any band”. That was a super special night for us being a handful of people away from selling out our first show as Rozu.

What should people expect when they check the band/you out? How would you describe yourself?

We ride a fine line of Metalcore and Post Hardcore influence, so you’ll be in for some really fun heavy music with a strong sense of melody. You’ll want to swing some fists and cry at any given time.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

I think it is just about thinking smarter. It can’t just be all about the art anymore and playing your local market every weekend when starting off. Marketing strategies and touring smartly are the absolute best things for any young artist right now. Get your music heard by as many people on Spotify and build anticipation in your home market to draw out more people.

RozuWhat are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

Currently we are working on some music videos and finalising our album. We are always working on our Spotify playlists on our artist page so if you’re looking to get inside our heads check those out for sure.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

We would absolutely love to open up for our friends in Oh, Sleeper. That would be an incredibly fun tour to be on.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

Thousand Below are already making some waves but I truly feel they are about to be that next huge Rise Records band. If you guys haven’t checked them out yet, then you’re missing out on some great music.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

Seeing Underoath for this time had me leaving the show knowing I wanted to be a vocalist in a heavy band.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The last show I saw was the Bad Omens, Oh, Sleeper, Thousand Below tour. I don’t normally go to heavy shows anymore but that was a damn good show.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

When people find out how much pop we listen to it always shocks them. Listening to a lot of Justin Timberlake and Bieber as of late.

What are your plans for 2020?

We are trying to reschedule all of our tours we had set up before the music industry shut down from the COVID-19 virus. We are hoping to get on the road ASAP along with releasing a few more singles throughout the remainder of the year.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We are all pretty active. Find us on any social site of your choosing by heading over to www.rozuband.com.
