Introducing: Otherworldly Entity

Otherworldly Entity is an indie Nu Metal, Alternative Rock, and Hard Rock band based out of Syracuse, NY, USA. Vocalist John Harris was on hand to fill in the blanks on our introduction to Otherworldly Entity…

What are the origins of Otherworldly Entity, how long have you been playing together?

JH: We started playing back in 2018 in support of my solo album at the time, called DICHOTOMY. Pretty quickly, we started writing together and developing the sound of what is now Otherworldly Entity. Zlatko, Matt, and I have been playing together since, and Shawn recently joined us on drums, which we’re very excited for.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe Otherworldly Entity?

JH: We really aim to bring genuine humanity to light. Happiness, sadness, anger, hope, we want to bring to life the dynamics that we all live through day to day. We do this with the juxtaposition of heaviness and softness, darkness and light. So expect to feel.

How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

JH: Our very first show was on a tiny stage at a haunted attraction here in Central New York called Frightmare Farms. It’s an incredible place, and it really was a great setting for the first show for a band called Otherworldly Entity. It went really well, and we kept pushing forward from there.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams at the minute with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out to build a name for themselves?

JH: Personally, I think the most important thing right now is being genuine and real. It’s so easy to get caught up trying to be something else or trying to fit a mold, but at the end of the day, I think being an artist that is true to yourself makes you so relatable to others who are struggling through similar challenges in life. Music is about the human experience and the human condition.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

JH: We just released our new single and music video Monster Inside You. Definitely check that out

In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do you feel you would be best suited to open for?

JH: We’re actually about to open for Cold in Rochester, NY on May 14, and Psyclon Nine in Buffalo, NY on June 14. I think those are pretty solid fits for us. But I would love to open for Deftones, Mudvayne, Korn, Evanescence

Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and become a success?

JH: Junexa is a band that always impresses us. We’ve played with them, we love going out and seeing them play, and they’ve really been killing it lately

What are your own first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

JH: I can specifically remember the first show I ever played with a band. I was 14 years old and we only played one song: Glycerine by Bush. I was so terrified that as I played and sang, I had my eyes closed. It was at my high school, and there were about 50 people in the room. Different ages, races, religions, cultures, all sitting in their chairs. It was intimidating. When I made it to the bridge of the song, I opened my eyes and EVERYONE in the audience was on their feet singing along with me. There were no differences anymore. No divisions. This one song united everyone for a brief moment in time, and a peace washed over the room. I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since. That peace.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

JH: I think it was White Tides, Cactus Cathedral, Katspo, Invictra, Spit Nickels, and Coalition in Rochester, NY. I go to a lot of local metal shows.

What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?

JH: it isn’t current. It’s a pretty big one. Environmental protection to me is one of the most important issues that isn’t being addressed adequately. Nothing that we do today matters without a tomorrow.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

JH: Savage Garden’s Affirmation. I love that album so much.

Although 2021 was another year to forget, there were some amazing new albums released, what would be your album of last year? And, what new music have you been enjoying so far this year?

JH: It was 2020, not 2021, but I don’t care. Those two years are one to me. I’ll say “This is what I live for” by Blue October. It’s such an amazing follow-up to I Hope You’re Happy. As far as this year goes, do yourself a favor and look up A Greater Danger. Their new album is fire, and our old drummer Taylor left us for them. We love him and wish him the best with AGD.

What does 2022 hold for you?

JH: We released our new song Monster Inside You and we have some more new music coming out this summer. You can expect a lot more shows going on to our calendar, and maybe a tour.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

JH: We try to be very active. Your best bet is Instagram and Facebook, that is where we react the most.
