Introducing: Melodi

MelodiMelodi is an alternative/goth rock artist based in Bristol, new single ‘Twilight Sleep’ has just been released (check it out here) and Melodi talks to us about the single, as well as filling us in on her musical background.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

I remember growing up idolising female powerhouses like Celine Dion, I started singing at a very young age. I have a recording of myself saying ‘when I grow up I’m going to be a singer’ at the age of 4! Then as a teenager, I became interested in artists like Marilyn Manson, Rammstein and Evanescence, I would dress up in a way to imitate their look.

How long have you been performing?

For as long as I can remember!

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

I did my first gig when I was 10, I played at a piano recital in front of a huge crowd. It was terrifying at first but I’ve been hooked ever since. Don’t get me wrong, performing is still terrifying sometimes but it is very fulfilling.

What should people expect when they check you out? How would you describe yourself?

I want to invite everyone to my next conclave to fully experience Melodi. It’s not something words can do justice!

MelodiNew single ‘Twilight Sleep’ is out now, it seems a deeply personal song?

Mental health is a real issue. I wanted to write a song that would resonate with those struggling by opening up about my own issues with depression.

In places, the guitar melodies to ‘Buried’ have a middle eastern vibe, in what ways do your Turkish roots influence your music?

It’s actually not something done deliberately! Growing up in Turkey influences a lot of my life so it just comes naturally in my music

Your cover of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ is pretty special indeed, are there any songs that should simply never be covered?

Thank you! I don’t think Wonderwall is a song that should not be covered ANY MORE!

What particular issues at the moment are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about issues surrounding gender equality.

Let’s face it, the world is not particularly pleasant at the moment, and hasn’t been for some time. Social media is especially a cesspool, have you given up on it, or are you hopeful that things can change?

I think social media is what you make it. I use social media to share my solidarity with my fans and create that personal connection.

How has lockdown been? With the exception of friends and family, and gigs, what have you struggled without the most?

I’ve found it to be a challenging time for me, I’ve been focusing on my music and my single to get through it.

MelodiThe new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that an artist/band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

I think that you have to be very patient and dedicated to your music and everything that comes with it.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Ghost, I’ve been a big fan since I saw their live show last year!

Who do you feel is the next band to break out of the UK?

Cassyette, they’re incredibly talented!

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

I went to see The Hu earlier this year, their show and live sound was very inspiring.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

Under the Pink album by Tori Amos, she’s one of my favourite piano players.

What are your plans for the remainder of the longest year, ever!

To record and write even more music! I’ve also got some exciting shows lined up.
