Introducing: Lunar

California-based Progressive Rock/Metal band Lunar are currently working on their third album, and founding member Alex Bosson took some time out to answer some questions fired at him via the old interweb…

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

AB: Lunar formed back in 2013 between myself and Ryan Erwin. He sadly passed away in 2018, but I have since kept the project going, so Lunar has been around since 2013.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

AB: For me personally it was nerve-wracking and exciting. I was about 15 years old and it was a house party at my best friend’s house. And even though I was nervous, it was awesome! Lots of fun. Pretty much still what I feel playing gigs today; exciting, nerve-wracking, and fun. And now more exhausting too because I’m older.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?

AB: I always describe us as progressive metal. I think people should expect diversity. There’s a lot of different types of songs. However, I’d say to go into it without expectation. Just listen and hopefully enjoy.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

AB: I think it’s difficult to try to find a way to stand out in an age where everybody and their mother can find fairly easy ways to produce, create, record, upload, and distribute any content they want. I personally have never worried TOO much about finding ways to stand out. I think it’s more important to create the material that you really want to. Stuff you can be proud of. Then whether you’re unique enough to stand out or not, you can be proud of it forever whether it’s heard by 1 person or 1 million people.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

AB: We’re currently working on our 3rd album. It’s still fairly early in the process, so there’s nothing from it to check out yet aside from a couple of little teasers of us tracking some of the parts on social media. I’m hoping it will be out sometime maybe summer or autumn of 2021. In the meantime, I would tell people to check out our 2nd album, “EIDOLON,” which came out just 10 months ago.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

AB: Probably Haken. I think a lot of the people that enjoy them would also enjoy what we do.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

AB: I think Caligula’s Horse is gonna get huge soon. I know they’re already somewhat well-known in the Prog world, but I think in the near future they’re going to “break out.” I think a lot more people are going to be discovering them soon and they’re really going to explode soon.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

AB: In all honesty, I’ve known it’s what I wanted to do as long as I can remember. I had fantasies of playing big shows and being a musician even before I had a drum kit. I remember sitting around with some of my friends picking band names and naming songs when we didn’t have a band and no one knew how to play any instrument. Hahaha! I don’t remember a light bulb moment… it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

AB: Saw Opeth in Hollywood, CA at The Palladium. Incredible show! That was my 16th time seeing them and it never gets old to me. I’m glad we were able to because we saw them about 2 weeks before everything started closing down here in California.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

AB: I’m sure there are quite a few. The most surprising to the prog rock/metal fans would likely be some of the early Eminem albums. Or maybe the first Maroon 5 album.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2020?

AB: We’ve been spending this year focusing on the writing and recording of the upcoming 3rd album I mentioned earlier. We will hopefully have some more information we can announce about it soon. But I’m very excited about it!

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

AB: I personally am not on my social media pages very much, but the band pages always post updates about what we’re doing. And we always love hearing from fans about what we are doing, so please follow us and interact!
