Introducing: Chaoseum

Forming in 2018, Chaoseum emerged from the musical minds of four Swiss mates, hailing from different corners of Switzerland. They were brought together through sharing the same musical influences and passion for metal music, having performed together in symphonic/power-metal act Elferya. With new vocalist CK onboard, the band is gearing up to release a new album; ‘Second Life’, on September 25th. We spoke to guitarist Valery Veings about the origins of the band, and what those unfamiliar with the band can expect when they check Chaoseum out.

What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing together?

The band was born in Switzerland in January 2018. Loïc (guitar), Greg (Drums), and I played together before Chaoseum in a band called Elferya. Our singer CK joined us later, in February 2019, after our first album.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

That was in Yverdon in October 2018. We were really excited and impatient to share our songs for the first time. That was not as good as in my dreams but much better than in my worst nightmares.

What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you describe yourself?

We play music between heavy metal and metalcore. In the beginning, we had a female voice. Now, with CK our style is close to Nu metal/Metalcore. Like Trivium, Static-X, Korn, or Slipknot.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

Of course, it’s not easy. You have to work every time with good quality, not only have some good songs but you have to think about your image, sounds, and your performance on stage. After that, you should promote the band with efficiency. It’s a lot of work and maybe that will be not enough.

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

We just finished our new music video and our album is ready. The video is available now and the album on September 25th.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

Korn, because our future album sounds like this band and the voice is close to that of Jonathan Davis. I think that a lot of Korn’s fans can appreciate our music.

Who do you feel is the next band to break out?

The next big, big band is Parkway Drive but it’s already a big one.

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

I was 15 years old. I watched almost every day the “Live After Death“ (movie) by Iron Maiden and my motivation grew to learn guitar. I saved my money and bought my first guitar. I didn’t have enough money to learn with a teacher but I played on my guitar as much as I could. One year later, I was looking to join a band. I found one and the other guitar player helped me a lot.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

It was Halestorm at Les Docks, Lausanne.

The album that you have in your album collection/Spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

I’m not sure that will surprise someone, but I like old hard-rock bands. For example, I have the best of Pat Benatar, Bryan Adams, or Heart.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2020?

As I said before, a new album really soon. We will have two release parties in Switzerland, but unfortunately, our European tour with Fleshgod Apocalypse and Ex-Deo is postponed to autumn 2021 due to COVID-19.

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

We use often our Instagram and Facebook pages. You can find us at: www.facebook.com/chaoseum and www.instagram.com/chaoseum or our website here, but the best is to meet you during a concert. With pleasure, we will spend time with you after the show.
