Betty Harper

Introducing: Betty Harper

Wales-based singer-songwriter Betty Harper joins us to talk us through her musical background, and what you should expect when checking her music out.

What’s your musical background, how long have you been performing?

I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember but I didn’t start showcasing until the end of high school. I kept myself to myself for a long time until my dream became so passionate that I couldn’t just keep my music to myself any longer.

How did you feel performing your first gig? And how was it?!

The first gig I did was with the kids in my music class, we formed a band and performed at Battle of the Bands and it was such a surreal experience! That’s when I was certain this is what I wanted to do. The feeling you get after you perform is such a fantastic feeling, I can’t describe it.

What should people expect when they check you out? How would you describe yourself?

They should expect a lot of positivity. It’s so important in the time we are in that we are as positive as we can be. They should also expect a few puns because who isn’t partial to a few laughs every now and then!? Of course, not to mention, music… haha!

The new music scene is bursting at the seams with fresh talent, in what ways do you feel that a performer has to stand out from the others trying to build a name?

I think being unique and authentic is important. All my songs are genuine and from the heart, and that’s what perhaps makes me stand out in some way!

What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

At the moment, we are awaiting the release of 3 more songs that have been produced, in the meantime, I am trying to find new ways to connect with my followers over social media. They can keep up to date with new and exciting things happening on the Betty Harper pages on social media.

What band out there at the minute do you feel that you would be best suited to open for?

I’m not at the stage just yet where I could open for Ed Sheeran or Adele! So, I would say at this time, I would be best suited opening for Sami Brookes. She sings the same sort of music I do, she has a lovely personality and I get along with her really well!

Who do you feel is the next band/artist to break out?

Oooo that’s a good question, but I don’t really listen to band music, mainly just solo artists. It’s such a difficult question! I couldn’t say!

What are your first musical memories? And what was the light bulb moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

My first musical memory is when I was bought a guitar. I would play the drunken sailor song all day everyday, not because I liked it but because it was the only one I could play at the time! Haha. When I saw my mum on stage at church singing and playing the guitar, the lightbulb went off and that’s the moment I knew that this was what I wanted to do.

What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The last gig I attended was MUSE with my family. I wasn’t a huge fan before we went to the concert, but afterward, I would say that they were my only favourite band. Such an amazing concert I have to say.

The album that you have in your album collection/spotify playlist that would surprise most people?

My Chemical Romance. As I said before, I don’t really listen to a lot of band stuff but there was just something about that band that drew me in, I can’t stop listening to them!

Although 2020 was a year to forget for many reasons, there was some incredible music released; what would be your album of 2020?

Oooo I would have to say Prisoner by Miley Cyrus. Very well produced and written. The best bop to come out of 2020!

How active are you on social media and where can people connect with you?

I would say I am very active on social media and try to do as much as I can on the platforms. People can connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Just search for Betty Harper!
