Review: Forever Still – 'Tied Down'

After releasing a handful of EP’s on a pay-what-you-want basis, Danish rock band Forever Still have taken the next logical step, and got their debut album ready for a January 2016 release. ‘Tied Down’ is a concept album that features two of the original EP’s (‘Scars’ and ‘Save Me’) which, along with a handful of new tracks, tackle some deep, personal issues such as depression, anxiety, and worthlessness. Some of the lyrics cut to the bone. On ‘Awake The Fire’ Maja Shining sings…

“So tired of your voice, saying what I can or cannot do, every day, I do not want to be alone, but I can make it on my own, here I stand…”

Very emotional and honest, Forever Still don’t shy away from the pain, choosing instead to tackle it head on. With a style that perhaps echoes Amy Lee, Maja handles the angst very well, without ever coming across anything but sincere. She is as equally at home pouring her heart out on the gentler moments, as she is unleashing a guttural scream from the depths of Hell.

The album is a healthy mix of softer, more commercial moments, as well as short, sharp edgier tracks like ‘Scars’, ‘Awake The Fire’, and in particular ‘Breathe In’, which a Radio One DJ might describe as “banging”. The latter begins with a crushing groove, before it slows down to allow Shining to display her explosive vocal prowess. Again, the lyrics are quite bleak….

“I, I relived a thousand lies, one at a time, I, everytime I think I’ll die I just breath in and… scream”

When the band slow it down on ‘Miss Madness’, ‘Save Me’, ‘Your Light’, and the gorgeous title track, Shining’s vocals take on a more fragile, vulnerable state, yet retain their edge.

I can hear Bring Me The Horizon on day-time radio but chances of hearing a new band like Forever Still are slim to none. Either of these tracks would find an audience, given half the chance. Therefore, Forever Still have realised that word of mouth is crucial today, and are very pro-active on social media by creating a valuable online community where communication is very much a two-way street.

This is an album that grows on you. Every visit is rewarded with something that the listener might not have picked up on previous airings. Play it from start to finish in one sitting for optimum results. Definitely a band to look out for in 2016.

‘Tied Down’ is released January 15th 2016, and to get your New Year off to a good start, check the band out on…
